A common concern among those who buy stocks, especially in our volatile times, is how to reduce the risk that comes with owning stocks. How does one reduce the risk that one of your picks could sour and significantly reduce the overall value of your stock portfolio? This concern has been increased by investment disasters like Enron (which became a stock worth nothing) and the current bundled credit crisis. With the fears of bad times ahead, investors need to be aware of the basic strategies that ensure that a single bad pick will not completely destroy the value of their's investment portfolio.

Investors have been concerned with this problem for decades. In 1949, Benjamin Graham (mentor of Warren Buffett) wrote in "The Intelligent Investor" that one of the best solutions was to diversify one's stock portfolio.

The way that diversification works is that it spreads the risk among many stocks instead of having it concentrated into just one investment. Investing in just one stock is, as the old saying goes, putting all your eggs into one basket. By investing in more than one stock, you lessen the possibility that a single bad pick will wipe out your entire portfolio.

Diversification comes with its own investment concern. By spreading out your investment money among several stocks, you lessen the risk that a single stock's failure will ruin you; but you also decrease the benefit that a stock price increase will give you if you picked correctly. The logic says that if two stocks are better than one, then three, four or a hundred stocks are even better. Yet by spreading your investment over several stocks, you own less of any particular stock, so runs of good luck benefit you less. It is possible that you can spread your investments too thin.

So the question becomes "How many different stocks are necessary to adequately reduce risk, and at what point does the benefit of reduced risk level off?"

The answer that Benjamin Graham came up with in 1949 was that fifteen stocks was sufficient; later in 1968, he revised his answer to just ten stocks. The reason for the limit is that a portfolio of fifty stocks, according to Graham, is not significantly safer than a portfolio that contains only twenty stocks. By the time that you have diversified your portfolio with twenty-five stocks, you have reduced your risk by eighty percent, and the addition of another stock will not shift the risk much lower. Owning a hundred stocks will cut your risk by ninety percent, and it would take four hundred stocks to cut your risk by ninety-five percent. Unless one is totally adverse to risk (in which case, you should not be investing in the stock market in the first place), twenty-five stocks will dilate the amount to an acceptable level.

If you've own a shed and have ever tried to lug your lawn mower or other heavy equipment into it, you know how back breaking this is. It's probably high time you build a ramp. It's easy to do and save you the strain of heaving that heavy stuff into your shed. You need a little skill with tools and few materials, so you can build a ramp yourself on the cheap.

Make your ramp wide enough to for the equipment you will be moving in and out of your shed. 3 feet is usually enough but I would make it as large as your door on your shed, or even 6 inches or so past the outside of your door.

Cut a 2x6 ledger equal to the width of the ramp. Rip the top so it is beveled to the angle of your ramp. Level the ledger so that its 5 inches below the floor of your shed. Drill three holes into the ledger board and attach it to the shed with 3/8 x 3 inch lag bolts. If you're attaching it to concrete, use ½ x 3 inch redheads.

Measure the height of the shed floor to the ground. For a proper slope that is easy to walk up and haul heavy equipment up, multiply your measurement by 8. For example if your floor to ground height is 10 inches, your ramp is going to be 80 inches long. Cut 3, 2x4 stringers about 6 inches or more longer than your ramps length. This way you have extra when you make your final cuts, so you don't cut your stringers to short.

Rest the 2x4's along the top of the ledger board. Using a square a straight edge, hold it tight against the outside of the ledger board and tight against the side of your stringer. Scribe a mark along the edge. This will be the angle you will need to cut all your stringers. Use the same method along the ground on the other side of your stringer. Cut to the lines and test fit. Once the test board is precise, use it as a pattern to cut the rest of your stringers.

Fasten the 2x4 stringers to the top of your ledger board, one on each end and one in the middle. Attach with 10d galvanized nails by toe nailing into the stringer below and to the sides of your shed. If you're butting against concrete, use tapcons to attach to the slab by periling and screwing in the tapcons.

Cut 2x6 decking boards for the top of the ramp. Measure the width of your ramp and cut your decking boards 1 ½ inches larger than the ramps width. An example is if your ramp is 3 feet wide cut the decking boards 37 ½ inches. This way the decking boards hang over the edges ¾ inches over the sides of your ramp.

Attach your decking boards from the top of the ramp to the bottom. Secure them using 8d galvanized nails or use no. 8 2 inch decking screws. Place each board tight against the other if you are using pressure treated boards, or space using a nail if you are using other materials besides pressure treated such as cedar or other rot resistant wood. The last board should be ripped on a bevel to make a nice transition between the ramp and the ground. You may place patio blocks at the front of the ramp or use gravel.

A nice ramp for all your hauling and equipment should now be complete. You can stain or paint the wood to match your shed. The ramp should last for years to come and save your back for years as well!

...stock market... by losy

To the outsider, the stock market appears random and erratic. What makes a stock go up or down? Experts can't seem to predict the market, so why should I even try? This uncertainty scares many potential investors away from the market and its high rate of returns. People are missing out on good money!

This is sad, because the stock market is more predictable than it appears. While they may look similar, stocks are not gambling. This article will shed some light on the unpredictable stock market and will hopefully make things predictable.

First, I have to concede one thing. The stock market is very unpredictable in the short-term. The market severely overreacts to news, whether it's company earnings, economic factors, or something silly like who wins the Super Bowl. Nobody can predict all the news, which makes the stock market unpredictable in the short-term.

But in the long-term (6-months to a few years or more), the stock market is very predictable. If the company makes a lot of money, the stock's price will go up. If the company doesn't make money, the stock price will go down.

When I purchase a share of a company, let's call it Predictable Stock Market, Inc., I am buying a portion of this business...and a portion of the money the comapny makes. I pay $60 for one share, which represents one of 6 million shares of the company. Let's say Predictable Stock Market, Inc. then earns $6 million in profit the next year. That means my portion of the earnings is $6. That's how much you're $75 share of Predictable Stock Market, Inc. made!

Now Predictable Stock Market, Inc. has a choice. The company can give that $6 directly to you as a dividend, or it can reinvest that $6 into the company to make even more money in the future. Let's say Predictable Stock Market, Inc. decides to give $2 to you as a dividend and reinvest $4 into expanding operations. The reinvested portion of earnings make the stock price go up, making your $60 share of stock will be worth around $64. And you'll have $2 of cash in your hand. It's that simple!

So you purchased the stock at $60. It's not worth $4 more and you have $2 in cash. That means your return was $6/$60...10%.

Now company's earnings are not erratic or random. If you were asked how much money Coke will make next year, where would you look first? Most likely, you'd see how much Coke made last year? (You might also look for the years before that and see if there's a history of growth, and then add that growth to last year's profits, but that's not really important). And you'd be pretty close! Unless something drastic happens, Coke will probably sell as many sodas and make as much money as it did last year.

So let's see how much we should expect to make this year if we purchase one share of Coca-Cola (KO). I go to finance.yahoo.com to find the data. One share of Coke sells for $48. Last year Coke paid $1.24 per share in dividends, and earned another $2.23 per share that it reinvested into making more soda. If the same holds true (it probably will), then I'll earn $3.47 ($1.24 + $2.23). Spending $48 to earn $3.47 equates to a 7.2% return. That's a lot more than my bank account or money market will make!

Now this won't be 100% accurate. Remember that the market will overreact to news and current events. But over the long haul, Coke will keep earning that same rate, and you can accurately predict the unpredictable stock market.

Are you still skeptical? Try it for a year! Track some sticks and predict what will happen this year. Most likely, you'll be very close in all your predictions. Although I have to warn you - You'll be disappointed by all the money you missed out on!

Don't forget, you will want to include broker fees into your calculations. For more on minimizing broker fees, read Avoid Broker Fees! Here are the Best Places to Buy Stocks.

And there you have it! Stock market investing is not gambling and it's not rocket science. If a company makes money, its stock will go up! Now that you know this, you can accurately predict the unpredictable stock market. And hopefully you can earn good, predictable returns on your investments!

With the all Federal Reserve interest rate cuts lately -- and with another expected at the end of April -- it is no surprise that many people are wondering what interest rates have to do with things that affect their lives. One of these things is the stock market.

Interest rates and the stock market

It is true that interest rates do not have a direct effect on the stock market. Instead, they have an influence on the stock market. Interest rates influence the stock market in two main ways: through companies and through economic perception. The Federal Reserve sets interest rate policy regarding the rate at which banks lend money to each other. This is an important point to be made. When an interest rate cut is made, it has certain effects on the psyche of those involved.

Interest rates and their effects on companies. This is one of the ways interest rates affect the stock market. Companies can get loans at lower interest rates when a cut is made. When interest rates go up, it costs more to borrow money. This affects overhead costs. And it means that companies' profits are affected. So if interest rates go down, the thought is that companies will spend less money and therefore have higher profits. This invites investors to put their money in the stock market, and it raises the market values. Interest rate hikes, on the other hand, can have an opposite effect in some cases.

Interest rates and economic perception. Investors can get an idea of where the economy is headed due to interest rates. The perception is that when rates are cut, the economy is being stimulated and is likely to expand. In the case of the recent interest rate cuts, many perceived that the Fed was willing to do anything to help the stock market, and this meant that there were jumps in stock values directly following the rate cuts. On the other hand, interest rate hikes put a cap on economic expansion. They can also indicate inflation fears, and this can influence the stock market.

Obviously, though, interest rates are just one factor to consider in stock investing. Your decisions should not be based solely on interest rate cuts or hikes. There are many influences on the stock market, and sometimes perception can make the market behave in ways that are contrary to conventional knowledge. The stock market is unpredictable. But it is still possible to discern general trends.

Appliance Repair For Every Single Room In The House Appliance Repair Solutions For Your Every Appliances

Western Boise Appliance Repair 5 by westboiid

In this article I will review a couple of washer and dryer repair services in my area of East Texas. The repair service I will look at now is Hughes Appliance located in Mineola. I called Hughes Appliance when I had a problem with my dryer. Not only does Hughes Appliance work on washers and dryers, but they also specialize in heating and air.

Hughes Appliance was very prompt in answering the phone the day that I called and asked for a repairman to come out. They also kept their word when telling me what time they would be at my home to work on my dryer. The serviceman that came out quickly recognized the problem with my dryer as needing rollers and glides. He actually had all of the parts on his truck and was able to fix the problem very quickly. The quality of his work was excellent as I have had no problems with my dryer since.

I also feel that Hughes Appliance charged me fairly and their rate was actually a little less than their competitors I checked with. Another repair service in this area is Ramirez Repair Service and I will say that Hughes Appliance has them beat by a country mile! I have heard several folks say that Ramirez's work is not top quality and they would never call them again. They have also told me their repairmen have been rude. This is from word of mouth, which in my opinion, is what good business is made from. People will usually recommend good services and also let you know about not so good services. If you stop and think about it most places you do business with was probably recommended to you by someone who has used them and received good service.

I would definitely recommend calling Hughes Appliance the next time your washer or dryer goes out. Hughes Appliance also works on refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, heating and air conditioning. So as you can see, if it's broke, they can fix it!
